purchase of push button flashing crosswalk signage from Tapco.

BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
On September 28th, City staff met with Prairie View Elementary staff to review a safety concern that has
been brought to their attention by parents of students that either bike or walk to school. Their concern is
that there are a large number of students crossing Maciver Avenue at 78th and 75th Street.
After the meeting, staff went in to the field to look at both of the intersections and agreed that installing
the push button flashing crosswalk signs similar to what is at the Odean Avenue and 78th Street trail
crossing would be a good solution in this situation. Staff was instructed to get quotes to bring before the
Public Works Subcommittee for approval. Staff has discussed this situation in house and Parks and
Recreation Director Demant suggested removing the push button flasher signs at the Prairie Park crossing
and using it at one of the crossings so we would only need to purchase one set of flashers for the state
contract cost of $5,325 from Tapco.
Staff is recommending that we remove the push button flashers in front of Prairie Park and place it at one
of the intersections and purchase one set of flashers from Tapco for the state contract price of $5,325. The
Public Works Subcommittee was presented with this information at the October 24th meeting and
recommended that it be placed on consent agenda.
