City staff is recommending that the City Council approve the purchase of a single -axle truck chassis
equipped with a dump box and plowing equipment.

BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
The City Council previously approved this purchase on January 14, 2019. Due to a revision in the cost of
the truck chassis, City staff is bringing forward this revised purchase for approval, which will supersede
the approval provided at the last meeting.
The 2019 Fleet CIP includes the replacement of the City's 2000 Sterling 7501 single -axle dump/plow truck.
As of December 10th, the truck had 5,717 hours and 59,257 miles on it. Staff is recommending that the City
replace the truck with a single axle chassis equipped with a stainless-steel elliptical body, sander, pre -wet
tanks and plow/wing equipment.
Staff is recommending that the City continue to purchase Mack truck chassis for our larger truck builds.
The City has had very few issues with the Mack chassis and it is also the intent to streamline from a fleet
maintenance perspective. Staff has requested state contract pricing from Nuss Truck & Equipment and
received a quote of $115,806. Nuss Truck & Equipment has offered the City $15,000 for a trade value for
the 2000 Sterling; however, staff will be placing the truck on the Govdeals auction site to attempt to get
more than $15,000 for the used truck.
Staff also requested two separate state contract quotes from Towmaster Truck Equipment and Crysteel
Truck Equipment for the buildout on the truck and received prices of $99,252 and $96,551.39 respectively.
Although the Towmaster quote is $2,700.61 more than the Crysteel quote, staff feels that it's a higher
quality build. Staff feels that it is a better build due to the: warranty, overall height of the finished build is
7" lower on the Towmaster, hydraulic hoses are better quality, and overall workmanship of the build.
The City has built two trucks over the last three years, one from each of these companies and has far fewer
problems with the Towmaster versus the Crysteel build.
Staff is recommending that the City purchase the Mack truck chassis from Nuss Truck & Equipment for
$115,806 and have the buildout done by Towmaster Truck Equipment for $99,252. The total purchase
price for the build is $215,058 or $200,058 net cost after the $15,000 trade value or auction proceeds. This
amount is below the 2019 budgeted amount of $208,000.
The Public Works Subcommittee was presented with this revised information at its January 23`d meeting
and recommended that it be placed on consent agenda.
