BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
The City stepped into the leadership role in 2013 for administrating the Otsego Prairie Festival. Through
community outreach a committee of five individuals comprised of Otsego residents, employees and
business owners was formed to help organize the event.
Through many hours of planning, the committee created a new community focused identity which
included a new name, website, and logo. The purpose of this newly created identity was to help the
groups and organizations that have been a part of the Festival in the past feel more involved in the
planning and organization of the Festival, This new identity seemed to also open the door for new
businesses and organizations that haven't been part of the Festival in the past to also become involved.
These groups which include Speedpro Imaging, Scharber & Sons, Rockwoods, Lowes, Design Kw,
Brandy's Boutique, and Stritesky Photo's contributed over $10,000 worth of in-kind services. other
groups like Elk River Area Special Olympics, Otsego River Riders, Cub Scouts and Otsego Rod and Custom
volunteered over 220 hours.
The before mentioned businesses generously donated $3,550 to allow the committee to add attractions
to the Festival like bands and fireworks. Even though the weather didn't corporate with either the
bands or fireworks the feedback from the participants and vendors was overwhelmingly positive. one
vendor, who has been a part of the Festival from the first year, said that even though the Festival closed
early due to rain he had his third highest grossing year. Otsego Rod and Custom, a major partner of the
Festival, stated that they had the most cars entries they ever have had, over 230.
With these and many other positive comments the committee is excited to start the planning process
for the 2014 Otsego Prairie Festival. The committee is anticipating the planning process to be more
streamlined this year with much of the "foundation" work already being complete.
