RE: Special Event Dates for 2014
Background:
The three special events that the Parks and Recreation Commission put on in 2013
were again overwhelming successes. We estimate that we had over 4,000 people in
attendance at these events, these numbers reflect the hard work and dedication of the
Parks and Recreation Commission and the vital role in the community. It certainly
makes the job of promoting new programs much easier because of the access to the
amount of people attending these events.
In 2013 the events were held on the following days:
Easter Egg Hunt March 23 (Easter was on March 31)
Pumpkin Patch October 12
Santa Day December 14
Proaosed dates for 2014:
Easter Egg Hunt April 12, 2014 (This date was already set last year by the
Commission, Easter is on April 20, 2014)
March 28, 2015 (Easter is on April 5, 2015)
Pumpkin Patch October 11, 2014 (MEA is October 17 & 18, 2014)
Santa Day December 13, 2014
Conclusion:
Staff is requesting that the Parks and Recreation Commission review the information in
this memo and select dates for the 2014-2015 Otsego Easter Egg Hunt, Pumpkin Patch,
and Santa Day.

RE: 2013 Parks and Recreation Review & 2014 Parks and Recreation Preview
Background:
2013 was an eventful year for the Otsego Parks and Recreation Department, here are
some of the highlights:
Recreation:
• Our recreation programs attracted over 14,000 participants.
• Welcomed Connie Schwecke onto the Parks and Recreation team.
• Prairie Center underwent renovations and is already generating considerable
interest.
• First year that the Parks and Recreation Department took the lead on the Otsego
Prairie Festival.
• Partnered with over eighteen businesses for over $20,000 worth of donations for
recreation.
• Partnered with groups like River Riders Snowmobile Club to enhance existing
programs.
• Over 500 hours of volunteering for recreation programs and events.
• 1st annual kickball tournament with over 100 participants.
We added many new programs for 2013, the most popular ones seem to be when
we partner with other groups like Midwest Archery, Riverwood National Golf Course,
Otsego River Riders, and Otsego Rod & Custom.
Parks:
• Constructed three full size soccer fields at Prairie Park.
• Took over mowing boulevards for a considerable cost savings for the City.
• The Parks and Recreation Commission directed staff to start grooming Zimmer
Park Ballfields for games, over 500 kids were able to play games because of this.
• Added over 1,000 cubic yards of engineered wood chips to each of the
playground structures.
• Over 400 hours of volunteering for park beautification projects.
We are excited for 2014, with the addition of Prairie Center programming is better able
to become more diverse. Some of these programs will include kid's garage sale,
community fair, wine & canvas, and outdoorsman fair. Other programs that we are
considering are father/ son firearm training, more sports camps, starting senior
programs, and starting an outdoor based program for kids to include skills like archery
& firearms training, and certifications for snowmobile and AN.
Parks will remain busy in 2014, we will be tearing out the outdated preschool play
structure at Schoolknoll and adding a new structure at modern structure. We will be
also putting the final touches on the Prairie Park Soccer Complex with an anticipated
mid -summer opening date. Other projects will include path overlays and sealing,
installing water and electric at the Prairie Park Baseball/ Softball Complex, and
miscellaneous tennis court repair.
Conclusion;
Staff is requesting that the Parks and Recreation Commission review the information in
this memo and offer recommendations for programs and park improvements for 2014
and beyond.
