06-25-98 BOOK MINJune 25, 1998 OHPC BOOKS No books have been sold during this past month; therefore, our report of 5/26/98 remains the same. However, there is one correction to the entry of 1/07/98 Claudia Menzel. A typo error occurred; the total recorded shows $10.00. At should be $15.00 for the purchase of the book, "Otsego In The Beginning". Claudia did pay $15.00 for the book as substantiated on the receipt filed. The total amount collected on sale of the book is $1,380.00 as indicated in the receipts column. 5-26-98 OHPC BOOKS RECEIPTS December 1996 Grant from Lutheran Brotherhood December 1996 Grant from Wright -Hennepin Electric 92 'Otsego In The Beginning" books sold to date 49 'Otsego Cemetery" books sold to date DISBURSEMENTS 9-25-96 Kinko - 100 "Otsego In The Beginning" books 9-25-97 Kinko - 100 "Otsego Cemetery" books 11-11-97 Kinko - 51 "Otsego In The Beginning" books CURRENT BALANCE CURRENT INVEN'T'ORY 40 'Otsego In The Beginning" books @ $15.00 38 'Otsego Cemetery" books @ $10.00 TOTAL ASSETS $500:00 500.00 1380.00 490.00 $2870.00 $1354.68 613.17 804.87 $2772.72 $97.28 $600.00 380.00 $980.00 $1077.28 Our objective is to sell books at "cost". As you requested, I am sending my comments. TITLE Page # INTRODUCTION 2 Paragraph 2 Typo "developmet" should be "development" If I understand correctly, the purpose of this study is "formulation of preservation planning goals and priorities". Items #1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 are already reflected in Otsego city ordinance No. 94-9. #8 It would be helpful if you explained "why". 3 Paragraph 2 states " . . . eight subsections ." Only seven follow. After reading the rest of the document, it appears that "Property Types" was omitted. 5 #12 If so, why is this document titled "Otsego Historic Context . . ."? #13 You may not be aware that a program is being developed for "Heritage Day" in October. It will be a narrative with slides. It is being designed to use for school programs and any interested groups. I PREHISTORIC . . . 1 Paragraph 1 states sites have been recorded " It would be helpful to identify them or provide us a source for the information. 3 Paragraph 3 Use of word "attenuated"? Perhaps my dictionary is obsolete, but do you mean "weakened, made thin, lessened, etc"? Last line Should the word be occupancy? 4 Paragraph 2 What is the "Mound Builder Myth"? -2 - II HISTORIC . 3 Paragraph 3 ". . . 1850-1854 Samuel Carrick . at the mouth of the Crow". This is incorrect. See early maps and land claims. Carrick's Prairie was the area right across the Mississippi from Elk River. He established a ferry there. The Carrick claims were in Range 23, Sections 15, 22, 23, 27 and 34. III INITIAL EURO -AMERICAN 1 Paragraph 1 The name Pleasant Grove should be clarified. The 1855 census and some early township records show "Pheasant Grove". 2 Paragraph 3 states ". . . majority of the original landowners never actually settled in Otsego ." When comparing my alphabetized lists of the names of original claims with those displayed on the 1879 map, I find that many remained. 3 Paragraph 4 "Gensing" should be "ginseng". Would like more information about "brewing beer", and "production of beer and ardent spirits". The earliest settlers were mostly strict Methodist - Episcopal non-drinkers. Perhaps the later wave of German settlers around Albertville were into the brewing business. IV• AGRICULTURE 2 Paragraph 1 Few people will know what "epiphytotic" (plant) diseases are. 5 Paragraph 4 The "Davis House" should be referred to as the "Ingersoll House". Ingersoll was a very early settler, had a brickyard on his farm and built the house. Davis purchased it in the 1940's. 6 1. How do we obtain copies of 1940 aerial photos? 2. Type "significance" should be "significant". V TRANSPORTATION 1 Paragraph 4 McDonald's Ferry was also established in 1854 at.the Otsego townsite. 2 Paragraph 2 The railroad crossed only a small SW corner of Otsego. The railroad at Elk River was heavily used. 3 Paragraph 4 Should read County Road 39, now part of the Great River Road" It . . . and Highway 101, also Great River Road". -3 - VI POSTWAR . . . 2 Add to first sentence "In the eastern part of Otsego". VII TERRITORIAL . . . 1 Paragraph 1 Northwood was sometimes referred to as No_w:)od. Lily Pond and Aydstown should be added. (During the early 1900's, Lily Pond was treated as a separate "village". See early newspapers with columns for Lily Pond and Otsego. Lily Pond had a post of !:i^e and was listed on early census reco_ds.) Last paragraph "Barbo".should be "Barber". 3 Paragraph 1 Typo "Inpsection" should be "Inspec-. tion". VIII CHURCHES . . . 1 Paragraph 6 I believe the original church was the "Methodist Episcopal" denomination. Camp meetings continued beyond the 1890's. The camp g::oands were south of the church building and contained a "taber- nacle" building. 2 Paragraph 2 %Je know the location of one site with 3 graves. IX SCHOOLS . 2 Paragraph 2 ". . . from 1858 to 1992 . . ." should read ". 1990 .". Otsego became a city in 1990. 2. The old town hall has been moved from its original site. Typo "builting" s'zould be "building". XI GEOGRAPHIC . . . 1 Paragraph 1 ". . . in the own right ." should r:ad ". . . in their own right". 2 Second line should read ". and a .small part of the southern boundaries .". Most of the south boundary is not the river. Paragraph 2 ". . . Otsego's upland lakes .". There are no lsk:s in Otsego; only a few large ponds. 3 Paragraph 3 ". lakes." should be omitted. X CONSERVATION . . 2 Parag::aph 1 Otsego has not had "recreation areas" until very rodehtly• It has not had "summer homes and cottages". There is a '.:railer park. -4 - If my understanding is correct, this document informs us that the following goals need to be ::stablished: I ". . . survey . . . prehistoric propertie: archaelogical 4 sites . . . must be performed joy persons qualified ." It . . . require private developers to .finance archeological surveys as a condition of project appr oval." II " survey . . . historic period properties. sites it . . . performed by persoris qualified . . ." III " . . . survey . . . historic buildings and archeolo,-jical 4 sites" IV of. . . comprehensive architecture/hist;or_y survey . . . 6 houses, barns and outbuildings ." V "reconnaissance survey . . . transportation -related properties" 4 VI " . . formulate preservation and reuse stral;egies . 2 "Assemble . . . photographs and written information about buildings and sites dating from ca 19-D0 to 1975 " "Maintain list of important buildings corl:;t.r_-Uc:ted :since 1975". VII ". . . comprehensive reconnaissance survey of 19th century platted townsites " of . identify and describe buildings . . . which show the history and development of the village of Otsego (1856-1905; ." VIII " . . . survey the Otsego cemetery ." (This has been donifl It . . . architecture/history survey of churches and related buildings ." IX " . . . survey of the Otsego Town Hall property . . . r 2 X " . . . survey to characterize conse vatioz and recreation " xi thematic study of geograp`i .c features " 4 . . . compile data on geology " " . . .
