Chair Elaine Norin called the meeting to order at 6:32 P.M., Sharon Carter, Arlene Holen, Elaine
Norin, Joy Swenson and Frieda Lobeck were present. Council member Jerry Struthers was
present.
The minutes of the meeting of April 25, 2002 were discussed and amended. Within the
paragraph reflecting the attendees' names, Joy Swenson should be listed as excused.
The notation reflecting the meeting time for the summer (the time change is not just for the
summer) should reflect:
=* THE MEETING TIME HAS BEEN CHANGED TO 6:30.
ARLENE MOVED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE APRIL 25, 2002 MEETING AS
AMENDED. SECONDED BY FRIEDA. MOTION CARRIED.
Frieda submitted an updated written book report. A copy is attached.
Harlan Rask/Cemetary Association accepted the invitation to the July 2002 OHPC meeting.
Arlene and Frieda planted two plants next to the bench in the cemetery.
OHPC receives many publications each month, such as MN Preservationist, Guide to Historic
Sites, CLG Grants Catalog. These publications are available for review and will be kept in
OHPC storage room. Note: Scholarship money is available for fees to attend seminars/meetings.
CLG Grants Catalog was discussed. There is grant money available that could be used to
transcribe audiotapes. Sharon will obtain several estimates of the cost to have the tapes
transcribed.
The commission will not be reviewing the storage boxes located at the end of the hallway until
further notice. Judy Hudson indicated the City does not have a current retention process, which
means the review of the boxes must be put on hold.
The Heritage Commission will participate in the city festival, which will be on September 21,
from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. The OHPC information, possible speakers and refreshments will
be held inside city hall. An invitation will be mailed to previous Heritage Festival attendees. A
flyer for the festival will be included with each invitation. Because the first settler placed a claim
150 years ago, Elaine suggested this as a possible theme for the overall festival.
Arlene mentioned a diary of a member of the Washburn family, written about the time of the
civil war. She suggested the diary could be used as part of our presentation at the fall festival,
perhaps as a handout. .
Arlene suggested the Elk River Heritage Commission be included in the mailing for the festival.
Elaine will add them to the mailing list.
Elaine reported she is almost ready for her next book. The 1880 to 1910 census indicated most
of the citizens were farmers. The possible title of the book will be 1880 to 1910 The Family
Farm Years.
At previous meetings, the commission discussed Barb Day's request to put information regarding
the Otsego Cemetery on the Internet. Elaine received a letter from Barb indicating the
information is already on-line, although she is not sure who placed it there. Elaine will get the
Web Address.
Applications were sent to two citizens who expressed interest in OHPC.
The commission decided to continue its membership to the Minnesota Heritage Preservation.
A check will be issued to cover the $25.00 membership fee. Checks will also be issued to cover
the cost of sheet protectors and albums.
Sharon moved to adjourn, Arlene seconded. The meeting adjourned at 7:43 P.M.
We will meet again on Thursday, June 27, 2002 at 6:30 P.M. at City Hall.
Respectfully submitted,
Sharon Carter, Secretary
