Chair Elaine Norin called the meeting to order at 6:37 P.M., Sharon Carter, Arlene Holen, Frieda Lobeck
were present. Joy Swenson was absent. Council member Jerry Struthers was present.
ARLENE MOVED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE AUGUST 2002 MEETING AS PRINTED.
SECONDED BY FRIEDA. MOTION CARRIED.
Frieda submitted an updated written book report. A copy is attached.
A draft of the letter to the Planning Commission regarding the cemetery, was distributed. After review,
several changes were recommended. Elaine will type the letter and forward to the Planning Commission.
Heritage Day items:
• The registry reflected 120 people signed the guest book.
• The mailing list for next year will be updated to include the new names.
• Two people indicated interest in the Heritage Commission. Elaine will contact them to determine if
they are interested in joining.
• Suggestions for next year included plastic bags (for books), fly swatters, camera, tape recorder and
possibly a video camera
• A sign should be made indicating children must be under the control of an adult.
• Sharon will prepare a coloring book (with historical significance) to keep children busy, a separate
table with crayons would be set up.
All agreed the OHPC should have a membership with the Minnesota Historical Society. Elaine will get
an application.
Elaine asked if OHPC should also have a membership with the Wright County Historical Society (to share
ideas, etc.). SHARON MADE THE MOTION TO JOIN. SECONDED BY FRIEDA. MOTION
CARRIED.
Jerry brought up the issue of the old town hall. The hall is an eye sore and there are health & safety
issues. There was a discussion concerning lack of funds to restore and the possibility of getting a person
who could quote the cost to restore. Elaine wrote to the Minnesota Historical Society regarding
assistance, but has not had a reply. FRIEDA MADE A MOTION TO RAZE THE OLD TOWN HALL.
SECONDED BY ELAINE. THE MOTION WAS DEFEATED. The town hall will be discussed at next
month's meeting.
Previously, Jerry requested the Elk River Box Factory be included on the list of historical sites. Elaine
will ensure the Box Factory is added.
Sharon distributed a handout reflecting comparison costs of several companies to transcribe audiotapes.
OHPC had about 12 tapes of oral history that need transcribing.
Meeting adjourned at 8:43 P.M.
We will meet again on Thursday, October 24, 2002 at 6:30 P.M. at City Hall
