04-27-03 OHPC MINCity of Otsego — Heritage Preservation Commission Thursday, April 24, 2003 Call to Order: Chair person, Ron Black called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m. Sharon Carter, Jean Schneider, and Chris Wilson were present. Joel Coles and Jeannine Christiansen were absent. Approval the Minutes: Ron moved to approve the minutes of February 27, 2003 as printed. Seconded by Sharon Carter, Motion carried. Book Sales Report: Due to Jeannine's absence, the monthly book report information was not available. Special Guest: Jackie Roghli, Editor of Otsego View, was present at our meeting. Due to Elaine Norin's departure, Jackie requested that someone take over writing of the "historical article column" for the Otsego View. Jackie emphasized that it is imperative that the deadline for the articles be met. She will need a historical article by the end of June for the July/August printing. Sharon Carter volunteered to write the July/August article. Sharon indicated that she has been corresponding with the Spencer family regarding historical information. It was suggested that the committee take turns writing the historical article for the Otsego View. Jackie also wanted to take a photo of the Otsego Heritage Preservation Commission members, but all were not present. The photo will be taken at the June 26, 2003 meeting. Old Business: Consider criteria for namingparks Input for criteria was submitted by all members. The criteria are listed as follows: • Special events • Important people (i.e. a substantial voluntary donation from a family in the community, etc.) • Building (site, structure, church) • Geographic boundaries • Historical patterns, themes (i.e. Prairie Park, Lily Pond Park) • An appropriate name for the specific park area • Incorporate some Native American names New Business Tour Peavey house We are now unable to tour the Peavey house because a family has moved into it. Renew request for a historical site on the Old City Hall and where the Peavey house sits. Sharon Carter motioned that the Vie property be excluded. Motion was accepted. Consider OHPC use of Peavey house How do we plan for restoration of the Peavey house? 1) Designate it as a truly historic site. Need a good restoration plan for the Peavey house due to the danger of it being sold. • May be possible to receive donations. • Donations from community services may be used as a tax write-off. • Grants • Sharon suggested putting Chris Wilson's house on the list of historical sites. Ron Black motioned to investigate the restorations of the Peavey house. Motion was accepted. Other Business Council member Jerry Struthers joined our meeting. The Otsego Festival and the Heritage Festival will be in September. Sharon motions that the Otsego Festival and the Heritage Festival be at the same time and date. Motion was accepted. Historical Data: Sharon Carter said that more audio tapes need to be transcribed — She will put this on the Agenda. Pictures need to be scanned — approximately 500. Sharon says they need to be categorized also. How do historical groups catalog their pictures? Chris Wilson will investigate. Old pictures viewed during last year's Heritage Festival need to be scanned. Jerry Struthers suggested that we interview Alvin Beaudry who was on the Otsego Township previously. Interview Norm Freske, the 1St mayor of Otsego. Sharon will get questions for interviewing residents. Ron moved to adjourn, Sharon seconded.
