BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
The Prairie Center Re -use Committee met on December 14th and among other items, discussed
putting a wall mural above the front desk at Prairie Center. Discussion was based around
making the front entry way welcoming to the different user groups that utilize the building
throughout the year. After discussing the different possibilities, the Committee recommended
that a welcoming statement with a background be put in place. They felt the statement should
be inclusive for all users of the Prairie Center.
If approved, the mural would be on a vinyl piece that is adhered to the wall and would have the
ability to be removed and updated at a later time if needed. The total amount of the mural
including design, manufacturing, and installation would be $705. A mock-up design is attached
to this memo for review.
Throughout the construction planning process the committee reviewed the security of the front
desk. It was originally thought the since there would always be staff present when people
where in the building that a security gate to secure the front desk would not be needed. Since
the opening of the building however, securing the front desk has been brought to Staff's
attention as a concern. The main concern centers on Commission and Council meeting nights
when there are staff present in the building but not at the front desk and leaves the computer
and other items at risk.
If approved, the gate would be a roller type gate with a see through aluminum design that
would have an extension piece to fully secure the front desk. The gate would be "hidden"
above the front desk on the office side, and once down the gate would give the user the ability
to lock it. The total amount of the gate is $3,592 which includes the installation.
Staff has also attached an updated Prairie Center remodel budget which will show that the
balance of funds from the budget is $38,611.78.
