BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
At the April 28, 2014, work session, the City Council discussed the Recreation Administrative Assistant
position and pay. Attached is the position description that includes both administrative and recreation
programming duties. A position evaluation determined that the position falls in pay grade 5. The
recommended pay placement within the range is at step 1 effective May 13, 2014.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
General Statement of Duties: Assists with the coordination and supervision of recreation
programs. Coordinates activities at and rentals of Prairie Center. Provides administrative
assistance to the parks and recreation departments.
MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Recreation Programming:
a. Participate in the development and implementation of recreation lesson
plans that emphasize fun and skills of the program or sport
b. Contribute ideas and suggestions for programs
c. Maintain program supplies, distribute and collect, and conduct maintenance
d. Instruct and supervise programs using positive techniques and clear
guidelines to maintain a relaxed, orderly atmosphere
e. Maintain program attendance rosters
f. Ensure class begins and ends on time
g. Travel to various locations with program supplies and to monitor programs
h. Cleanup before and after program
2. Facility Rental:
a. Coordinate rentals at Prairie Center
b. Work with finance department on rental invoices and payments
c. Coordinate the schedule of temporary, part-time rental staff and security
d. Ensure building is clean before and after rental use
e. Assist with park rental and field scheduling as requested
3. Administrative:
a. Greet and assist public
b. Research, analyze and prepare reports as requested
c. Update websites with current information
d. Assist with marketing via social media as directed by the Parks and
Recreation Manager
e. Perform other administrative duties as requested
4. Other:
a. Promote a positive and motivating environment
b. Follow all safety procedures
c. Provide exceptional customer service to residents, developers, elected and
appointed officials
d. Make decisions that are always in the best interest of the City, its residents
and businesses
e. Perform other duties and projects as assigned
f. Confer with supervisor, peers, and employees to discuss issues and resolve
issues
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Knowledge of recreation programming
• Knowledge of marketing and social media
• Ability to operate office equipment including a personal computer with
specialized and standard office and specialized software, including word
processing, spreadsheets, and websites
• Ability to establish effective working relationships and to communicate
effectively, both orally and in writing, with customers, vendors, City staff, and
the general public
• Ability to prepare spreadsheets, analyze data and identify and resolve
discrepancies
• Ability to organize and prioritize the work and meet deadlines
• Ability to enter information with speed and accuracy and to maintain accurate
and complete records and documentation
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Ability to handle detail and accurately process transactions and solve problems
• Ability to lead and manage large groups
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Five years of experience working with children leading group activities
2. Two years of relevant office experience
3. High school diploma or equivalent
4. Valid Minnesota driver's license
S. Current CPR and first aid training certification
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Previous recreation programming experience
2. Training or education in recreation programming
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to sit for long periods of time and manipulate objects using fine motor skills
for extended periods. Must have ability to bend, stoop, push, pull, and reach
periodically. Required to talk and hear. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds. Must
be able to see colors. May be exposed to loud noises and extreme weather
conditions.
