General Statement of Duties: Performs routine to skilled maintenance and repair work on
vehicles and equipment used by the public works department to ensure equipment and vehicles
are operational when needed and to prevent unnecessary breakdowns; performs related duties as
required.
Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Public Works
Superintendent.
Supervision Exercised: None.
TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMED
The listed examples may not include all duties performed by all positions in this class. Duties
may vary somewhat from position to position within a class.
*Schedules and performs preventative maintenance and repairs on department vehicles as
needed; ensures vehicles operate safely, performs DOT -required safety inspections and
maintains appropriate documentation.
*Troubleshoots and performs mechanical repairs to vehicles and heavy and light equipment
including: diagnosing electrical and mechanical problems, replacing water and fuel pumps
and filters, cleaning and replacing injectors and injection pumps, repairing, replacing,
rebuilding or adjusting hydraulic systems and motors, engines, transmissions, exhaust
system, differentials, air brakes, drive shafts, U joints, steering, heating and cooling
systems, alternators, starters, etc.
*Provides accurate and comprehensive repair and service information for all equipment and
vehicles to staff for input into computer.
*Operates heavy and light equipment to perform a variety of street, park and storm sewer
maintenance work and shop tasks.
*Removes snow from city streets, municipal parking lots and trails, applies salt and sand, hauls
snow, cleans up after storms, etc. as needed.
*Assists in maintaining and repairing streets including tearing out blacktop, patching potholes,
crack sealing and seal coating; sets up work zones, places cones or barricades around
hazardous work areas, etc.
*Maintains and repairs park equipment including lawn mowers, generators, spraying equipment,
tractors, trailers, tillers, and ball field equipment.

*Performs minor fabrication on new and used equipment and mounts parts on equipment for
seasonal use and removes at the end of the season.
*Utilizes technical service manuals, books, other texts and individuals as resources in the
maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.
*Assists in reconstructing and maintaining pathways and maintaining storm sewer ponds, inlets
and outlets; maintains shoulders and mows ditches.
*Maintains an inventory of parts and orders or recommends purchases to ensure an adequate
supply.
*Participates in required safety training and adheres to safety requirements.
*Cleans and rebuilds catch basins and assists contractors in repair and maintenance of storm
sewer system.
Assists with building maintenance and repair work in City buildings.
May assist in trimming trees including cutting tree limbs into sections using a chain saw and
removing debris for chipping.
Assists with miscellaneous repairs at the wastewater treatment plant, on occasion.
*Assists other city departments as needed.
Performs other duties as needed or assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
*Considerable knowledge of tools, methods, operations, and materials used in the maintenance
and repair of public works equipment and vehicles, including heavy equipment owned by
the City.
*Considerable knowledge of heavy and light equipment and vehicle operation, including
preventative maintenance and inspection procedures and practices.
*Considerable knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in equipment
operation.
*Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in street,
park, storm sewer and vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance work.
*Considerable skill in the operation of heavy equipment.
*Considerable ability to repair and maintain a variety of heavy equipment and vehicles.
*Considerable ability to read and understand technical and repair manuals and related materials.
*Considerable ability to analyze vehicle and equipment problems, determine the cause of the
problem, and correct as needed.
*Considerable ability to maintain equipment records and implement a preventative maintenance
program.
*Considerable ability to follow oral and written instruction, prioritize work and perform duties
independently and as a member of a team.

*Considerable ability to communicate effectively with parts vendors, city staff, and the general
public.
*Considerable ability to perform manual labor requiring continual use of fine and large motor
skills, standing, walking, or sitting for long periods, and frequent bending, stooping,
pushing, pulling, crouching, kneeling, twisting and turning to perform repair work,
sometimes in confined spaces.
*Considerable ability to regularly lift and carry objects weighing up to 60 pounds and less often
lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
*Considerable ability to work with exposure to loud noises from operating equipment.
*Considerable ability to see, hear and manipulate objects requiring fine motor coordination to
perform the work, frequently repetitively.
*Considerable ability to distinguish color when repairing hydraulic or electrical lines, and night
vision when repairing equipment outside or plowing snow.
*Working ability to work with and around chemicals and fumes, dust and dirt and with
occasional exposure to electrical shock.
*Working ability to work with moving or vibrating parts on equipment and to manipulate levers
and tools.
Working ability to work at heights up to 30 feet to repair equipment using a boom truck.
*Working ability to work outside, sometimes in inclement weather or temperature extremes.
*Working ability to operate a telephone, radio, and computer.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a vocational/technical training in vehicle repair or gasoline and diesel engine
repair, and two years of experience maintaining and repairing vehicles and equipment or an
equivalent combination of training and experience. Must possess a valid Minnesota Class B
driver's license. A Class A license must be obtained within six months and maintained thereafter.
Must be DOT certified within six months of hire.
Prefer possession of a Class A driver's license and DOT certification at time of hire.
