Item 4.1 Memo Item 4.1 1 TO: Parks and Recreation Commission FROM: Nick Jacobs, Parks and Recreation Director DATE: February 14, 2024 RE: Ashwood Park Construction Plans Background Information Fall/Winter 2023 At the September Parks and Recreation meeting Commissioners conducted the Ashwood Park Community engagement. Flyers were mailed to residents who live within .5-mile radius of Ashwood Park. The .5-mile radius is the service area which is identified in the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. If residents were not able to attend in person a QR code was on the flyer that linked to the survey. Residents were invited to attend the September Parks and Recreation Commission meeting and voice their opinions on which concept they prefer and which amenities/program they would like to have at the new park. Feedback from the meeting was used to guide the development of Ashwood Park. November the Parks and Recreation Commission met and reviewed the survey and concept that was created from the community feedback. It was determined at the September meeting that elements from both concepts should be infused into the park design. The primary focus was to maintain as many trees as feasible and to have a nature play/theme. One traditional element incorporated into the park was the half-sized basketball court. Residents who attended the community engagement meeting were adamant an element for multigenerational play was included in the park design. The Parks and Recreation Commissioners reviewed the presented information and gave recommendations which were used to move into the construction documents phase. Item 4.1 2 February 2024 Staff and Park Planning Consultants HKGi have worked to test and develop Ashwood Park to the construction document phase. In this phase elements and amenities from the Master Plan and concepts are tested, to ensure their feasibility on the site where Ashwood will be constructed. The minor changes discovered was the miniature sledding hill and cornhole/bocce ball area were removed. This change was due to topography and the priority of saving trees. All the other elements and amenities from the Master Plan were achieved. The slide deck that will be presented by Mr. Solomonson from HKGi, shows the few remaining items to discuss. Decisions will need to be made about the following: shade structure, electric or solar lighting, and the play equipment. Staff and HKGi have gathered all the necessary information for the Parks and Recreation Commission to make an informed decision. Attached in the packet are renderings of potential playgrounds and multigoal option for the basketball court. Requested Commission Action Staff is requesting the Parks and Recreation Commission review the Ashwood Park Construction Plans slide deck and bring recommendations and comments to the meeting. Possible recommendation: • Approval of the Ashwood Construction Plans as presented and recommend City Council consider authorizing the bidding process.
