Protective Eyewear Policy
Purpose:
To provide a safe and healthful workplace for Employees
To comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations
covering use of safety eyewear by employees at risk of eye injury.
Definitions:
Approved Safety Glasses — All safety glasses shall bear the ANSI Z87 stamp and have
protective side shields
Exposure area — Any area where a recognized eye hazard exists or an area where there
is a potential eye hazard.
Protective Eyewear — Protective eyewear may be safety glasses, goggles, or other
unique protection, as appropriate to the job. Eyewear may be either non-prescription or
prescription, as needed by the employee to safely perform the job. Eye protection shall
meet the requirements of ANSI Z87 —these products will be marked with "787". Note: a
face shield is not "eye protection" unless used with goggles or spectacles.
Secondary Protection — PPE such as welding helmets and other face shields are
considered secondary protection. When worn alone, they do not provide adequate
protection to the eyes from flying objects.
Side Shields — OSHA requires lateral protection on eye protection devices wherever a
flying particle hazard may exist, and flying particle hazards are virtually always present
in any occupational environment. Most Safety Glasses have lateral protection
integrated as wrap around lenses.
Face Shield — An impact -resistant shield that helps to protect your face from chips,
sparks, small debris, or wire wheel bristles. Face shields should be used only in
conjunction with spectacles or goggles.
Prescription Safety Glasses — Safety Glasses with prescription corrective lenses.
Prescription safety glasses without proper lateral protection will not be accepted as
protective eyewear
Over Glasses —ANSI Z87 approved eyewear designed to fit over prescription glasses.
Requirements:
All employees shall wear Approved Protective Eyewear when there is an exposure to an
eye hazard or a potential exposure to an eye hazard. This includes, and not limited to

steam, water), any type of power tool (portable and fixed), hand tools if required by the
manufacturer or if the operation creates an exposure or potential exposure.
Supervisors have the responsibility of ensuring that employees comply with this
requirement.
Failure to comply can result in formal disciplinary action for employees and/or
supervisors.
Prescription Safety Glasses:
Regular employees are eligible for prescription safety glasses. Safety Glasses shall be
provided at the employee's department's expense to a maximum of $150 every other
year when:
• The Job Hazard Analysis indicates the need for protective eyewear.
• An employee working in an eye -risk job is initially hired.
Seasonal employees are not eligible for reimbursement of prescription safety
glasses. Over Glasses Protective eyewear designed to fit over glasses will be
provided.
