BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
As you are aware, the Albertville Otsego Joint Fire Advisory Committee has been discussing the
possibility of entering into a formal joint powers agreement for fire service. Both Otsego and Albertville
City Councils have thus far been open to and supportive of this approach to providing fire service based
on the limited information they have received and their preliminary discussions of the topic.
The Fire Committee was in agreement that this item should be high on the list of priorities for the new
fire chief. Thus, the Albertville City Council has scheduled a work session to begin very preliminary
exploration of this topic on May 4. Albertville City Administrator Adam Nafstad said they will review
joint powers agreements in general to give them the background information they need to determine if
a joint powers agreement is the right next step. This is merely the first phase in deciding if and how to
proceed.
Assuming they agree that they want to continue down the joint powers agreement path, there will be
many meetings to come. You will need to meet in work session to identify Otsego's expectations and
there will be joint meetings to determine and agree upon the provisions of the agreement.
No action is requested of you at this meeting other than if you do not want to explore a joint powers
agreement with Albertville for fire service which would be a change from previous indications. A work
session on this topic will be scheduled in the future.
