Staff recommends waiving the Prairie Center rental fees for the Ava Inspired 5k event to be held on
August 8th. 2015.

BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
In 2010 the first Ava Inspired 5k run and walk was held at Prairie Park. The group also had a barbeque
with about 400 people total for the day. Proceeds from the event are donated to the Foundation for
Retinal Research (FRR). FRR was founded in 1998 at a time when very little was known or published
about Leber's Congenital Amaurosis (LCA). Families affected by LCA had difficult time acquiring
information and making connections to help them understand the eye disorder. The Foundation for
Retinal Research has bridged the gap between families and research. This website offers people the
most current medical and research information available, connects them to other families and provides
links to services related to the field of blindness.
In 2011, the Committee started their 5k run and walk starting at Rockwoods/Holiday Inn as part of
Otsego Jamfest and ran a route along Park Ave, into Otsego County Park, and then returned on Park
Ave. to Rockwoods/ Holiday Inn.
Since 2012, the Ava Inspired 5k committee has moved their event back to Prairie Park. Each year since
2012, the Parks and Recreation Commission has recommended to the City Council to waive the shelter
rental fees.
For 2015, the Ava Inspired 5k committee met with Staff to discuss the possibility of hosting the event in
Prairie Center. With the size of the event and accommodations at Prairie Center staff feels that the
event would work well at Prairie Center.
The Committee is requesting that the rental fee for Prairie Center be waived. The fee for renting the
building (both sides of the Activity Room) for a resident for 3 hours on a Saturday is $150 plus tax. The
Committee presented their request before the Parks and Recreation Commission at their June 16th, 2015
meeting. The Commission voted unanimously to recommend to the City Council to waive the rental fee
for the Ava Inspired 5K event.
