Otsego Heritage Preservation Commission - May 14th, 2015
Present: Chris Wilson, Zonja Matushenko, John Noll, Lisa Fahey, Mayor Jessica
Stockamp
The meeting was called to order at 7:20 p.m. One item added to agenda. Minutes of
the last meeting were approved.
1. Book Revisions. Lisa let the commission know that she is ready to start
rebinding once we get the materials together. The group identified several
action steps that need to happen before the books can be re -bound:
a. Identify the photos from the first book (Chris counted 17 photos) and
locate the originals (or as close to original as we can get).
b. Get those originals scanned and delivered to Lisa in electronic format
(either in jpg or tiff, format) and probably on a USB device.
c. Jessica will touch base with Kim to see what the charge might be to
put a new cover design together. Jessica would also check to see what
is left in the budget to cover printing the photo insert (on glossy
paper) as well as the possibly redesigning the cover and printing new
covers.
d. Lisa will check with the printer to get an estimate of what it would
cost to print the new covers and inserts. She can do the rebinding, but
would need to use a printer to get the inserts done.
2. 25th Anniversary Party. Jessica gave the HPC a recap of the 25th planning
meeting. They are going to have two separate events. One will be a smaller,
more private recognition for past and current commission members. This
will be held during a Council Meeting with maybe cookies/punch before or
after. The second event would be a larger celebration with more of a party
or festival feel, and would be geared more to the general public. Saturday, the
21St of November has been identified as the date, with the times tentatively
4- midnight? They are going with a general "Taste of Otsego" theme and
hope to get jump -houses, bands, and local restaurants lined up. They are
going to move forward with the medallion hunt idea to get people out to
different sites - there will be a grand prize awarded, TBD. They are looking at
merchandising options (T-shirts, etc.) as well as having a slide show running.
The HPC can helpull materials for the slide show as well as the medallion
hunt.
3. Festival Ideas. With the 25th anniversary of Otsego's incorporation this year,
it was agreed that the theme for the festival should be related or connected in
some way, for example "Celebrating 25 Years of Cityhood". The HPC could
use their presence at the festival to build interest and excitement for the
party in November. There was some discussion around having the slide show
(with photos from the original party as well as from the last 25 years) ready
and playing during the festival. We would need to work through some
technical and staffing issues such as how to make the images visible,
especially if it is a sunny day, and how to ensure the safety of the equipment
(laptop or monitor). Chris mentioned that she does not want to be tied down
to the booth the whole time and would like to be able to enjoy the festival as
well as work. Jessica mentioned that we might get some support from
members of the party -planning group, especially since there is some
crossover between the two groups. Hold the date on your calendar!
4. Naming of New Park (added agenda item). Otsego is adding a new park
(awesome!) and is inviting the HPC to be involved in identifying options for a
name. The park is in the southeast section of Otsego, near the intersection of
42 and 37, heading toward Dayton. During the meeting, Jessica pulled out
some old maps and showed the location, which may or may not be the site
that Oliver Kelly once intended as a city. It may also have belonged to John
Bottema? The park is still in the early design/planning stages, however the
council would like to have a couple of name possibilities to offer when they
meet with the public, which will probably happen in June or July. The HPC
needs to come up with options before or during the Tune meeting. Jessica is
going to talk to Barb about pulling tax records to find the trail of ownership.
S. Other tidbits of interest: Seniors have been meeting to play cards and
socialize on Mon and Wed from 10 a.m. - Noon. During this time, HPC
members can get into the room and/or connect with local residents. Chris
has come in a couple of times. She also noted a general need to get the
bookshelves and other materials better organized.
