RE: Troop 13951 Sleep in a Box Event at Prairie Park
Background:
Earlier this month, City Staff was contacted by representatives from Girl Scout Troop
13951 about their Troop participating in a "Sleep in a Box" event at Prairie Park in
October.
Troop representatives would like to participate in the "'Sleep in a Box" event to raise
awareness for homelessness in the Minneapolis area. The group would like to host the
event at Prairie Park in October and is requesting that the park hours suspended for
their event. Currently, the park hours are defined by 6-7-3 Section A of the City Code
as being 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., these hours can be temporarily modified by Council action.
Girl Scouts from Troop 13951 will be present during the July 21St commission meeting
to do short presentation outlining their event.
Conclusion:
Staff is requesting that the Parks and Recreation Commission review the material
included in this memo and provide a recommendation to the City Council regarding
adjusting the suspending the park hours outlined in the City Code for Troop 13951's
Sleep in a Box event.
