RE: Otsego Parks and Recreation Department's Mission Statement
Background:
With the City acting to establish a Parks and Recreation Department in April 2012,
program participation has increased significantly each year. Recently added programs
such as tumbling and senior programming have also seen strong preliminary numbers.
At the same time as the increase in program participation, the City has seen strong
growth in residential development as well.
With this growth, the City will be continuing to develop new parks and trails and
provide new programs to expand the system and meet the growing needs of the
residents. In order to continue to meet the recreational needs of the community, staff
would like to start the process of creating a mission statement and long and short term
goals. Once in place, the mission statement and goals can work as a guide for the
Commission and Staff to follow when making recommendations to the Council in the
future.
A mission statement is one sentence describing the reason an organization or program
exists. This should then be used as a practical tool that can be used to make decisions
about priorities, actions, and responsibilities. The following are some examples of
mission statements:
Roseville Parks and Recreation exists to provide diverse programs and facilities,
sustain park lands and preserve natural resources for today's citizens and future
generations.
Enhancing the quality of life for all residents. Fostering individual and
community in all aspects: physical, Mental, Social, Environmental.
Deliver responsive municipal services to ensure a safe, welcoming and vital
community now and in the future.

The Parks and Recreation Board, through its employees, is committed to provide
prompt, responsive and courteous customer service to the public in its quest to
provide quality opportunities through park and recreation facilities and services
which meet the interest and needs of all City residents.
The Lakeville Parks & Recreation Department will strive to administer safe,
proficient means of managing park areas and provide diverse recreation
opportunities through park and recreation facilities and services which meet the
interest and needs of all residents.
Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally
accessible and useful.
Once a mission statement has been created, we will then work on drafting long and
short term goals for the Department which will be done at the January Parks and
Recreation Commission meeting. Information on goal setting will be provided with next
month's packet.
Once the mission statement and goals have been completed the City Council will have
an opportunity to review the information. Once reviewed, the City Council will make
the final decision on the most appropriate way for the Department to proceed.
