PARK & RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES
FEBRUARY 8, 2006 7:00 PM
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at
7:00 PM.
Roll Call: Commissioners: Chair Aaron Stritesky
Kathy Roberts, Russ Langer, Mike Brumm, and Peter
Torresani.
Absent: Rose Cassady and Virginia Duran.
Councilmembers: Jessica Stockamp & Mark Thorsted.
Staff: City Administrator Mike Robertson.
Others: SRF Park Planner Ken Greishaber, Girls
Softball Association Brian Lindquist.
Agenda Approval:
The following items were added to the agenda. 4.A.
Field Usage, 4.B. Non -Conventional Parks, and 7.A.
Review of Santa Day.
Commissioner Brumm, seconded by Commissioner
Torresani, moved to approve the revised agenda.
Carried 5-0.
Election of Officers:
Commissioner Torresani nominated Mike Brumm for
Chair. Commissioner Brumm nominated Commissioner
Torresani for Chair. Commissioner Brumm nominated
Commissioner Stritesky for Chair. After a top
secret ballot Administrator Robertson announced a
tie between Commissioners Brumm and Stritesky at
two votes each. After another secret ballot in a
run-off election, Robertson announced that
Commissioner Stritesky was victorious with three
votes.
Commissioner Torresani nominated Commissioner Brumm
for Vice -Chair. There were no other nominations.
Commissioner Brumm, on the theory that someone who
wasn't in attendance always makes the best
Secretary, nominated Commissioner Durai-, for
Secretary. There were no other nominations.
Everyone congratulated the new officers.
Approval of minutes from January 11, 2006 meeting:
Commissioner Brumm, seconded by Commissioner
Stritesky, moved to approve the minutes as
presented. Carried 5-0.
Review of Park Designs:
Ken Greishaber of SRF reviewed the Park plans and
discussed some of the specifications for Beaudry
Meadows Park, Otsego Preserve Park, and Kittredge
Crossings Park. Commissioners were in consensus
that they liked the rural look for the park
shelters, that every park should have a different
color theme, that Administrator Robertson would
contact Wright Hennepin Electric to see if the City
could get a more attractive park light, that they
liked the different styles of play equipment, and
that each park should have a different look and
feel to it.
Ken said he would have the plans and specifications
to the City Council for approval on February 27.
Bids would be taken in March and approved at the
Council meeting of March 27, 2006.
Field Usage:
Commissioners discussed dividing up the Prairie
Park ball fields. Brain Lindquist of the Girls
Softball Association was in attendance. After
discussion Commissioners were in consensus as
follows;
1. Youth Baseball will have the fields Monday and
Wednesday Evenings.
2. Community Education will have three of the four
fields Tuesday and Thursday evenings for the T -Ball
and Toss -Ball programs.
3. Girls Softball will have one of the four fields
Tuesday and Thursday nights and will have first
call on any vacant fields those nights if Community
Ed does not use them all.
4. Anyone may use the fields Friday, Saturday and
Sunday.
City Update: Administrator Robertson noted that
the City would probably be receiving several other
pieces of parkland in 2006. Among them parks in
the subdivisions of Rottlund Homes, Crimson Ponds
North, Emmerich Development, and Orrin Thompson.
In addition, the developer of Kittredge Crossings
indicated interest in making his donation for the
community center early if the City would construct
the center soon.
Commissioner Stritesky asked for a budget update
for the next meeting.
Non -Conventional Parks:
Commissioners discussed some the requests for non -
conventional parks. Robertson said he would bring
a list to the next meeting and commissioners could
look at prioritizing the requests.
Santa Day: Commissioners reviewed Santa Day.
Commissioner Stritesky stated he didn't think he
could handle being Santa again and asked that the
City consider hiring a Santa.
Easter Egg Hunt:
Commissioners reviewed the planning for the Easter
Egg Hunt.
Adjournment: With no further business the meeting
was adjourned at 10:30 p.m.
