ITEM 5.1Otse 1o MINNESOTA TO: Parks & Recreation Commission FROM: Ross Demant, Parks and Recreation Director DATE: October 13, 2016 RE: Ice Rink at Northwood Park Background: A majority of the work is now completed at Northwood Park including the planting of grass seed which has already required two mowings! One of the features that was included in the design of the Northwood Park was a ice rink in the in -field of the baseball field. Amendities such as a flood light with a timer, larger in -field, and a blacktop entrance from the trail to the in -field were added with the thought of including a skating rink in the future. The City currently maintains two skating rinks at Priarie park, one pleasure rink and one hockey rink. These rinks are maintained by a truck that is fitted with a 450 gallon water tank and a skidster with a broom. These two pieces of equipment are easily acceeible because they are both located int eh mainteinance garage. Staff would need to trialer the skidster if flooding another location was ever inplemented. In the past, residents of the Frankfort Park neighborhood have approached staff with a request to flood an area at Frankfort Park. Staff have worked with residents to try to develop areas for skating and ways that residents would be able to assist staff with flooding operations. Staff does feel that there are viable areas at Frankfort where skating rink could be installed and maintained by City Staff. Requested Action: Staff requests that the Parks and Recreation Commission review the information contained within this memo and provide a recommendation to the City Council on how to proceed with providing another ice skating within the City. 2
