ITEM 5.1City Parks and Athletic Complexes Recycling Plan
Introduction:
ITEM 5.1
The City of Otsego Parks and Recreation Department will be starting an improved recycling plan
in summer 2017. The focus will be on community parks and athletic complexes. The goal as a
city and department is to have clean orderly parklands and athletic complexes, while promoting
sustainability.
Process of Implementation:
As stated in the comprehensive plan, the City of Otsego is committed to providing a
clean and sustainable community. Otsego is dedicated to preserving its natural
resources and existing ecosystems.
Research was done on the most cost effective way to try a recycling program.
A trial run is set to start summer 2017. If high enough use rates of the recycling
containers are seen, then more recycling containers will be added in the future.
An initial order of twelve, 32 -gallon recycle containers with lids were ordered for
outdoor use. Also, five, 23 -gallon recycle containers for Prairie Center were ordered.
The cost for the recycle containers both outside and inside was $737.74.
No additional costs were incurred since there already is a recycling dumpster at city hall.
Also, no additional staff time costs since placement will be next to existing trash
containers.
Mixed recycling is accepted, so no extra sorting time or costs will be an issue.
The containers will be using clear bags to ensure that no recycling disposed of will
contain contaminants.
The idea in the future is as new parks are added recycling containers will be included
into the design of the park.
The Parks and Recreation Department is committed to providing environmentally
friendly parks and facilities throughout the city.
