RECOMMENDATION:
City staff is recommending that the City Council call for a special meeting on May 8, 2017 to begin the
budgeting process for 2018.

BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
City staff is proposing to begin the 2018 budgeting process with a special meeting on May 8th. This first
budget meeting is really an opportunity for the City Council to set the tone for the upcoming budget
process. The City Council should take this opportunity to outline their expectations for the next year as well
as to set goals and objectives. Staff will then take the direction provided by the Council in preparation of
the budgets and property tax levies.
Attached is the proposed 2018 budget calendar which provides a general outline of the process. The City is
required by Statute to adopt a preliminary tax levy by the end of September. This requirement really sets
the timeline, especially for review of the General fund.
The outlined meetings are based on the actual number of budget meetings held in the past couple of years.
These meetings provide the opportunity for the City Council to review in detail each departmental budget
and pose questions to the respective Staff person, whom will be present at each meeting.
