We're excited for the opening of the new Prairie View Elementary & Middle School for the 2017- 2018 school year. With Prairie View Elementary & Middle School opening, there will be new bus stops, bus routes, and walking zones for both the new school as well as Otsego Elementary. We will also have the regular routes for children and teens who attend in Monticello, STMA, ISD 728 and Kaleidoscope Charter School. A map of sidewalks and trails is available on the City's website for parents to use to help plan their children's route to their bus stop or to their school for those that walk or bike. The City urges you to be alert for children standing near the street waiting for buses and walking or biking to school. Please stop and wait for children to load and unload when buses are stopped. Minnesota law requires drivers to stop at least 20 feet from the bus and not move until the bus stop -arm is retracted and the red lights are not flashing. Drivers violating the bus stop law are guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $300. The City Council hopes that you and your family have a great rest of the summer season. Even if you are parked in front of your house, in your driveway or inside your garage, lock your doors. Criminals like to walk down the street and see if a car is unlocked, if it is they open the door and take whatever is visible and move on to the next target. However, if the door is locked, they are more likely to move on. Make sure to roll up the windows and lock the doors when leaving your vehicle. Stash Before You Park Thieves like to window shop! Avoid leaving anything visible in the car. Almost any item that's visible from the outside -even if you think it is worthless -could be seen as valuable to a thief. Your spare change, sunglasses, even an empty bag (a thief may think there is something inside the bag) could be valuable in the mind of a thief. Stow your electronics and accessories well out of sight, or just take it along with you. Items such as power cords, adapters, and GPS windshield suction -cup mounts may get the attention of watchful thieves. If you remove the suction cup, make sure to wipe the ring off the windshield; it's a dead giveaway that you own a GPS. Try to get in the habit of putting items you want hidden in the trunk of your car before you arrive at your destination. Thieves will linger in busy parking lots looking for you to stash your valuable items. , Guardian Angels SENIOR SERVICES 1 2017 Fall Otsego View Coming to Otsego in 2018! Flushing the hydrants removes sediment and mineral build up within the City's water lines to maintain water quality and also tests the system for adequate flows. Note that the cap maybe left off of some hydrants after the water is turned off to allow the fixture to drain completely but City staff will return to replace the cap. The schedule for flushing is as follows: Riverwood National Development - October 5; East Public Water System (East of City Hall) - October 9-13; West Public Water System (West of City Hall) - October 16-20. DON'T FLUSH THAT! The Utilities Department experiences clogs in the municipal sanitary sewer system due to household items being flushed. Items causing these blockages include the following that may come in packaging saying they are "disposable": Cleaning Supplies Disposable floor dusters/mops (Swiffer pads), toilet cleaners, etc. Disinfection wipes Shop towels Paper towels Hygiene Products • Dental floss Babywipes Adult wipes Feminine product; Prophylactics Cooking Grease The costs for equipment and/or staff time to address this problem are paid for directly and only by funds generated by sewer fees. This debris not only clogs the sewer system but may create a blockage in the service line to your home causing sewage to back up into the house. The City is not responsible for any damages if a sewage backup occurs within your home. Your cooperation to not dispose of these household items through the municipal sanitary sewer system is greatly appreciated. www.OtsegoLions.org OTSEGO LIONS WINE TASTING Watch for details PO Box 163.Otsego OtsegoLions@gmaii.com 612.466.0013 /OtsegoLions NOW HIRING Free training provided to acquire your CDL! • Drivers wanted for vans and buses in Big Lake, Elk - — River, Rogers & 0■M■I■ Zimmerman - • Bring your kids to work with you • Flexible hours • Competitive wages THINK OF US FOR YOUR TRANSPORTATION NEEDS We have vans and buses to hire for all your trips and activities. BIG ADVENTURES There's something special about eleven -year-old Julia Cyr- Pobuda, something unmistakable in her wide smile, the glow in her eyes, her enthusiasm and energy. She's working hard to make a difference for other kids, and her passion for helping others is contagious. Julia's got a big heart, and she's sharing it with our community through Julia's BigAdventures. Julia's BigAdventures is the Children's Hospital patient's way of giving back, and her mission says it all: Bringing Fun to Kids at Children's Minnesota!! In 2011, when Julia was five, she was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children's Hospital with acute viral asthma. Her condition is triggered by viruses, unlike asthma brought on by activity or environmental factors, so it's very important for Julia to avoid catching any illnesses. Most kids grow out of this by age ten or twelve; Julia still sees her doctor at Children's every six months. Even though her time in the hospital was difficult and scary, the doctors and nurses made it better. "I just knew theywould take care of me," Julia says. "Children's is a good place to go." Julia felt bad for the kids at the hospital, and wanted to find a way to help them. At age seven, she had her first idea, to color with the kids on Thanksgiving. Volunteers must be at least fourteen, however, so instead she raised money to purchase crayons and coloring books. And she just keeps going: Julia has donated 249 of her own books, held a garage sale, and hosted fundraisers at local restaurants. Her biggest adventure to date, however, is the Julia's BigAdventures 5k Walk/Run. With the help of the Otsego Parks and Recreation Commission, Julia has been able to host her 5k event at the Otsego Prairie Park for the past two years. 2017 Fall Otsego View This year's walk/run was held on June 3, and featured a DJ, a variety of games and activities, food, and prizes. Julia surpassed her fundraising goal for the event and raised $8,339.32, and sponsorships from local businesses more than tripled. Julia and her family are already planning for next year. "When I had my first walk/run event, I got to go to the Otsego Parks and Recreation Commission meeting to ask for permission to use Prairie Park," Julia recalls. "I was really nervous to speak in front of them, but also really excited, too. It went great, though, and at the end they all were happy and thought I was doing a nice thing for Children's. This year, she's very close to her goal of raising $20, 000 in support of Star Studios, the hospital's in-house TV studio, which offers programming geared toward patients and their families. Julia has appeared on the Star Studio show Kids Clubhouse, and joins The Dude, a Star Studio host, for a live broadcast at the Minnesota State Fair on August 29. Julia also serves on the Children's Youth Advisory Council. Julia's mom, Jody, is with her every step of the way. "I love the joy that this brings her," Jody says. "There are a lot of things that get put on hold, but all that can come later. She's my priority. As long as she wants to do this, I'll help her do it." Julia loves figure skating and one day would like to perform professionally with Disney on Ice. She's going into sixth grade at Vandenberge Middle School in Elk River. Her favorite subject is math, mainly because it's challenging - and if there's one thing Julia loves, it's a good challenge. Thomas Constant was adopted the first time when he was only two days old. A doctor who knew both his birth and his adoptive mother brought them together and helped provide Tom with the family who would raise him. Five years later, Tom and his family were adopted again - this time by their new home and city of Otsego. Tom's parents were looking for a safer and more rural environment - something they found in a stucco house on Nashua. When Tom met and married his wife Diane, they chose to build their new home within a block of where Tom was raised. Over the years, Tom came to appreciate the many opportunities and activities that Otsego had to offer. He found work at Mate Precision Tooling in nearby Anoka, and he and his family enjoyed canoeing, fishing, and tubing down the Mississippi River. Tom was also an avid snowmobiler, a hobby which led him to volunteer on the Parks and Recreation Commission after Otsego was incorporated in 1990. As a commissioner, he enjoyed getting to choose land for parks and learning how to manage them efficiently. Tom was heavily involved in the formative stages of Prairie Park - putting much of his own time and labor into getting it ready. He also fondly recalls hosting a Halloween haunted house with fellow commissioners - a lot of work, but a lot of fun! 0 From OB to orthopedics, Stellis Health has you covered. He remembers the flood of 1965, when the Mississippi cut a new channel in the Parrish Avenue area. He watched a house detach and float downriver a couple hundred yards. The owner dug a new basement and secured the house in its new location! It was then that the Army Corp of Engineers bermed the shore to prevent further flooding. He also remembers a storm in 1997 that brought down so many trees that he and another parks commissioner helped clear the debris and harvested the wood to heat their homes. Through the many changes -from farmland to housing developments, from township to an incorporated city, Tom says there has always been good leadership in Otsego. As for Tom's adoption? Well, that has a happy ending too. As an adult, Tom connected with his birth family and discovered he had eight siblings -all tall like him! While they live across the U.S., he was lucky enough to meet his seven brothers, one sister, and birth mother at a reunion. He says it was a wonderful experience. Tom stays in touch with one brother who lives in Maple Grove, and he and his wife Diane cherish the time they spend with Diane's brothers and sisters. Our thanks to Thomas for his many years of service and for sharing HIStory with us at the Otsego Heritage Preservation Commission. Prairie View Elementary and Middle School, which will be the home of the Prairie View Hawks, will officially open for the start of the school year on Tuesday, September 5. However, students will have the opportunity to see the school during a few events in late August, including a sixth grade orientation to middle school on Wednesday, August 23, a kindergarten kick off/open house Wednesday, August 30, and an open house for 1st -6th grade students on Thursday, August 31. Prairie Viewwas the centerpiece of a $98 million ISD 728 district -wide building campaign, approved byvoters in the November 2014 general election. The new school, located near the intersection of MacIver Avenue Northeast and 80th Street Northeast in western Otsego, will cover about 124,000 square feet and house hundreds of students from the southern part of the school district. It will also be the first building in ISD 728 to include early education learners, elementary students, and middle school students. Kari Sampson is excited to serve the Otsego community as Prairie View's principal. Sampson has worked in ISD 728 for almost twentyyears as a middle and high school teacher, K-12 curriculum specialist, and elementary principal. Sampson has been busy during the past several months hiring an amazing staff, communicating and connectingwith students and parents, and preparing the building for students and staff members. School staff members have been thankful to partner with city of Otsego personnel to utilize Prairie Center for parent meetings during the winter and spring and for their `Soar into Kindergarten' events for students this summer. Parents felt fortunate to stay close to home and to learn more about the programming and Principal Sampson facilities in the Otsego community. It was fun to include folks from the city council and city administration in our building tours in June! The parent involvement group planned several fundraising events for the school with support from the Otsego and Rogers communities; events were scheduled at Chipotle, Papa Murphy's, and Broadway Pizza in Rogers and at Denny's restaurant in Otsego in both July and August. In addition, the school hosted a Jump City event at Prairie Park in July. Principal Sampson, school staff, and parents are so grateful for the awesome support from both the city of Otsego and these local businesses! Here are some tree care tips to get you started with those new trees! Step 1: Bringing your Trees and Shrubs Home Keeping roots moist is important during the move as moist roots help the tree establish quickly. Wrap the soil ball, container, or bare roots in a tarp or large garbage bag to trap moisture until planting time. Step 2: Planting your Trees and Shrubs BARE ROOT TREES/SHRUBS: Bare root trees and shrubs come without any soil y around the roots.; Make sure the planting hole is wide enough to fit all roots inside. Dig the hole deep enough so the first main lateral root is within 1 inch of the soil surface. A common planting error is digging holes too deeply. y . ,r g CONTAINERIZED TREES/SHRUBS: Remove the tree or shrub from the container by lifting it up by the stem and tapping down on the rim of the container. Then check to see if there is excess soil on top of the root system (often there is at least 4 inches of excess soil over the first main lateral root). Use a kabob skewer or straightened coat hanger to probe next to the stem into the soil ball until the first main lateral root is felt. If there is more than an inch of soil over those roots, use a saw to cut off the extra soil. Removing excess soil prevents future stem problems and promotes healthy root system. Next, check for encircling roots. Remove encircling roots by sawing off the sides of the soil ball. This encourages a healthy, spreading root system. _ Dig a hole that is at least double the diameter of the soil ball. Doubling the diameter of the hole makes it easier to position and water the plant. More water soaks into the loose soil, rather than running off the top of the soil surface. Step 3: Caring for your Tree MULCH: Create a mulch ring that is 2 to 4 inches deep and 6 feet in diameter around the tree. Keep the mulch off the trunk. This will help hold moisture in the soil and prevent trunk damage from lawn care machinery. STAKE (only trees that lean or fall over need to be staked): Use two or three stakes to secure a tree. Attachments k should be two-thirds of the distance from the ground to the first branch and stakes should be driven into the ground at least 18 inches deep. It is best to use a wide material such as canvas burlap or an old bicycle inner tube to loosely attach the tree trunk to the stakes. This allows the tree to move slightly without damaging the bark. After one growing season the tree will be established and stakes should r be removed to allow for correct development. WATER: Thoroughlywater the tree at planting. mt Then water your tree a couple times a week for a total of 15-25 gallons per week until the ground freezes. PROTECT TREES FROM CRITTER DAMAGE: Create a tube around the tree's trunk using 1/4 inch hardware cloth to protect it from critter damage. Extend the cloth at least 3 feet up, and don't let it touch the tree. Make sure hardware cloth is on your tree by late summer or early fall. Usually shrubs don't need protection, but fencing or hardware cloth around the shrub can prevent rabbit and vole damage.
